abstract

salinity is one of the environmental factors that have a critical influence on the plant emergence and plant growth and establishment. the determination of salinity tolerance threshold is a useful criterion to choose soil and irrigation water for cultivation of halophytes. in order to determine salinity tolerance threshold in amaranthus retrofelexus, an experiment was performed in greenhouse based on a complete randomized block design with four replications in two stages. in first stage, the experiment was performed with salinity levels of 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 dsm-1 and emergence percentage in salinity levels of 0 and 10 dsm-1 was 90 and 57%, respectively. in order to determine the full – scale of salinity tolerance threshold amaranthus retrofelexus, the second experiment was conducted. at this second stages, treatment were different levels of salinity equal to 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 dsm-1 nacl. amaranthus retrofelexus seedling were able to emerge up to the salinity of 14 dsm-1 nacl. generally, with increasing the levels of salinity, the seedling emergence percentage was decreased. according to result, salinity tolerance threshold for seedling emergence and performance of amaranthus retrofelexus under controlled condition was 14 dsm-1

Evaluation of salinity tolerance of different clover species at germination and seedling stages

In order to study the effects of salinity stress on growth indices of three clover species including, Trifolium resupinatum, T. alexandrinum, and T. incarnatum, an experiment was conducted as factorial based on a completely randomized design arrangement with three replications. Factors included seven levels of salinity stress (0, 41, 82, 123, 164, 205, and 246 mM) and three clover species. Diff...

Genetic Structure of Salinity Tolerance in Rice at Seedling Stage

The Oryza sativa L. F8 population derived from a cross between salt tolerance cv. Ahlemi Tarom and salt sensitive cv. Neda was used in the study. Germinated seeds floated on water for 3 d, and after were transferred to float on Yoshida's nutrient solution for 11 d. two weeks after sowing, the seedling was transferred to nutrient solution containing 51.19 mM NaCl (electrical conductivity 6 dSm-1...

Evaluation and Determination of the Salt Tolerance Threshold of Some Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) Ecotypes at Seedling emergence Stage

Extended Abstract Introduction: Fenugreek, is a medicinal plant that has been considered as a salt tolerant crop. This research was conducted to investigate the effects of salt stress on seedling emergence characteristics and determination of the salt tolerance threshold, declivity of emergence and salt tolerance index of some fenugreek ecotypes. Material and Methods: Seeds of five ...

Evaluation of rough lemon (Citrus jambhiri Lush.) as rootstock for salinity tolerance at seedling stage under in vitro conditions

In vitro approach was adopted to study the effect of salinity on survival and growth of rough lemon (Citrus jambhiri Lush.) seeds. North-West (Punjab) part of India has been facing a major problem of soil salinity for citrus orchards. Therefore, it is logical to study the salinity tolerance of common citrus rootstock, rough lemon (Citrus jambhiri Lush.), grown in the region. The seeds were trea...

Evaluation of grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) lines/cultivars under salinity stress using tolerance indices

Selecting and cultivating the crops/varieties that can tolerate water salinity is potentially animportant strategy to save fresh water resources and maximize the crop yield in salt affected areas. To evaluate the responses of 36 sorghum lines and cultivars to salinity stress, two fieldexperiments were conducted in non-stress (EC=2 dS/m) and salinity stress conditions (EC=12dS/m) using randomized...

Seed Size of Maize Hybrids: I- Effects on Emergence and Seedling Traits under Different Salinity Levels

There has been some concern about using small seeds that may result from seed position on the ear or poor growing conditions for seeding hybrid maize. This study was designed to investigate the effect of seeding three commercial maize crosses (Single Cross 2010, Three-Way Cross 310 and Three-Way Cross 321) with three seed sizes (large, medium and small) under seven salinity levels of irrigation...
